The conversation about iconic moments in Stephen King adaptations is a vivid one, from Carrie being covered in blood at the prom to the hobbling scene in Misery, and Doctor Sleep’s contribution to that legacy is the murder of the Baseball Boy. It would have been unnecessary for the adaptation to copy the Stephen King book exactly and trace Abra’s entire life story (including her traumatic vision of September 11th as an infant), but this added bit is a smart add. The extra scene doesn’t really do anything that the birthday party sequence doesn’t also do, which is presumably why Mike Flanagan felt it could be cut, but with the first act being so Dan and Rose heavy, its inclusion in the Doctor Sleep Director’s Cut is welcome. After they tuck the tiny psychic in, David and Lucy hear the same song she was playing downstairs, but after investigating they are surprised to discover that the piano is playing itself a.k.a. The longer version adds in a scene from the night before the party, and finds Abra playing the piano before her parents come in to tell her that it’s bedtime. In Doctor Sleep’s theatrical cut, Abra’s big entrance comes during her birthday party when she shocks her parents by getting all of the spoons in the kitchen to levitate against the ceiling, but the Director’s Cut shows that episode wasn’t the first time that the young girl freaked out her parents, David and Lucy, with her abilities. I grew up in the United States (nation and occupied territories) during late-stage racial capitalism I was trained to be exactly this reductionist and punitive.īut then I began the lifelong journey of decolonization, in which I have slowly and steadily been politicized into alignment with a collaborative, adaptive, healing worldview. When situations feel violent, when children I love are endangered, when people in my community are causing harm, I still feel that first instinct to control the situation and clarify a right–wrong binary, and sometimes that instinct goes as far as wanting to dispose of those causing harm. What I witness most often, even among those of us who claim to be abolitionists, is the longing for a future free of prisons and policing, paired with a tried-and-true practice of punishment and our own versions of social policing.Īnd before any pedestal formed against me can prosper, I want to be clear that I am not above or beyond this behavior. But most of us, even as advocates, don’t have a ton of lived experience of what it feels like to be inside of accountable relationships or structures. Many of us have been demanding structural changes: Defund the police! Abolish prisons! And we speak of these massive and amorphous ideas as if they are clear proposals we are ready to roll out. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone, save one-the historian. Yetu holds the memories for her people-water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners-who live idyllic lives in the deep. The water-breathing descendants of African slave women tossed overboard have built their own underwater society-and must reclaim the memories of their past to shape their future in this brilliantly imaginative novella inspired by the Hugo Award nominated song “The Deep” from Daveed Diggs’ rap group Clipping. Brief Summary of Book: The Deep by Rivers Solomon However, Perel goes beyond the gift of providing new understanding and offers suggestions on how to bring that sexy spark back into your relationship! Perel looks at how our views of sex regarding what is and is not appropriate has been influenced by history, culture, religion, and politics and how these work to stifle our erotic flames. Esther Perel encourages you, with witt and a great sense of humor, to look at what influences our ideas about sex in committed unions and the conflictual relationship between love/security and sex/eroticism. It brings to light and adds a voice to the feeling that something is off in your relationship when it comes to sex and commitment. This book will challenge what you think about love, sex, and relationships. Desire to keep sexual passion alive in long term relationship. Changes in sex after marriage or children.Wanting more passion and sex with a partner.Differences in sexual desires within a relationship.Difficulty talking about sex/sexuality with significant other. Ideal Reader: Sexually active individuals in long term relationships, Couples, Relationship therapists The two girls' reasons for not reporting the crimes also differ. The author's approach to the subject was different from Anderson's and touched upon elements of child psychology as well. But, that being said, Alexi's story felt fresh and unique. They both have a lot to deal with internally as well as externally and the ultimate theme of both is about gaining an understanding of why many victims feel unable to report what has happened. The two do have many similarities: both are about teenage girls who feel unable to talk about their horrific experience. I'll be honest and say I imagined this book would be yet another poor version of Speak. There are so many books about sexual abuse in its various ugly forms. What don't we remember from our early childhoods? What horrors did our minds automatically repress to shelter us from dealing with reality? Why are we like we are - could there be an answer hidden deep inside us, a long-forgotten memory that haunts us subconsciously? The kind of memories we push below the surface and force ourselves to hide away. The scary things in this book are the memories that people forget over time. Not even any serial killers or psychopaths. No demons or things that go bump in the night. And the worst part? This book doesn't have any monsters in the traditional sense. I had foreseen Faking Normal having many possible effects on me but fear really wasn't one of them. This list is compliant with United States Copyright Office circular 34.
